Passengers erupt into furious row over not wearing face masks on public bus

Passengers on a busy bus were filmed arguing over the use of face masks, with one of those involved not even wearing the face covering properly.

The furious row erupted on a number 10 Arriva bus in Liverpool, with video footage showing passengers involved in a loud confrontation.

The video, taken by a passenger on the bus, shows two people arguing about one woman not wearing a face mask, Liverpool Echo reports.

At one point the bus driver is forced to intervene, and he is heard telling a woman wearing a mask below her nose to "not lecture people about masks when you can't wear one properly."

One witness said: "The argument was on a number 10 bus going into town and it started when a young girl got on the bus not wearing a mask.

"A man and an older woman started ganging up on her and a massive row erupted.

"The bus driver had to get out of his seat and came over to demand what was going on and he told one woman she wasn't even wearing her mask properly.

"That woman then stormed off the bus and said she was going to report the incident."

Confronting the woman in the video, the bus driver says: "It's not my job to ask everybody that comes on the bus [why they] ain't wearing a mask."

Face coverings have been compulsory on public transport in England since June 15, with anyone not adhering to the rules facing fines.

Arriva said that the wearing of face coverings remains "mandatory for customers" although it does allow some exemptions.

An Arriva spokesperson said: "The safety of our customers and employees continues to be our priority. The wearing of face coverings continues to be mandatory for customers whilst using public transport (exemptions apply).

"We have clear guidance and signage for customers in regards to this and all other social distancing measures in place on bus, via social media and our website for more information please visit arrivabus.co.uk."

From Friday, face coverings have been compulsory in all supermarkets and retail outlets.

The government has said population-wide use of masks could help keep the Covid-19 reproduction number (R rate) below one.

Official guidance also states: "If you are infected but have not yet developed symptoms, it may provide some protection for others you come into close contact with."

Children under 11 and people with certain disabilities are exempt from the rules.

Some companies have called on customers to wear face coverings but said they will not actively enforce the new rules.

But John Apter, chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, called for them to rethink this, saying: "I would urge retail outlets to play their part in making the rules crystal clear - if you are not wearing a face covering then you are not coming in.

"Officers will be there to help stores if needed - but only as a last resort, as we simply do not have the resources."

He continued: "If you're out shopping and you see somebody not wearing a face covering it may be because they have a hidden disability.

"Don't jump to conclusions, don't have a go at them. This is new for us all, it's about keeping each other safe. Please be nice!"
