PASSENGERS travelling through Edinburgh Airport will be able to keep their liquids and large electronics in their bags following the completion of a multi-million-pound project.
Eight new scanners have been unveiled at the airport as the security hall has been transformed with the addition of two extra lanes to its existing six.
The £24m investment “completely modernises” the process thanks to new technology which is also in place at other VINCI Airports across the world, bosses at the travel hub have said.
They added that the new 3D scanners will allow passengers to move through security quicker.
Liquids still need to be 100ml or under, but can remain in bags, which bosses at the airport hope will cut down on single-use plastic bags.
Large electricals, such as iPads, tablets, and laptops, can also stay in hand luggage.
At Aberdeen and Glasgow Airports, liquids must be placed in a bag with an airtight seal and only one liquid bag per person is permitted.
Michael Hering, head of security at Edinburgh Airport, said: “This will be welcome news for the millions of passengers who travel through Edinburgh Airport every year, and we’re glad to be able to complete this project and speed up the process.
“We’ve invested almost £24m to install this cutting-edge technology to improve the overall experience for passengers, and 97% of passengers are already passing through in under ten minutes.
“It’s also important to note that our high safety levels have been maintained and improved on due to the 3D technology, meaning it is a faster, more secure process in time for peak summer.”
