A passenger who allegedly tried to storm the cockpit of a Jet2 plane, forcing it to return to Stansted, has been charged by police.

Chloe Haines, 26, of High Wycombe, was charged with assault following the disturbance earlier this summer.

Ms Haines was previously fined £85,000 by Jet2 for a "catalogue of aggressive, abusive and dangerous behaviour" on a flight bound for Dalaman, Turkey on June 22.

Witnesses described how the 26-year-old tried to storm the cockpit and attempted to open the aircraft doors during the flight.

She was said to have been restrained by both crew and customers while two RAF Typhoon fighter jets chaperoned the plane back to the airport.

People living near the airport reported hearing loud bangs, which were later confirmed to have been sonic booms caused by the two RAF jets.

Upon landing, Ms Haines was arrested by Essex Police on suspicion of assault, criminal damage and endangering an aircraft.

The force confirmed on Monday she had been charged with assault and "recklessly or negligently acting in a manner likely to endanger an aircraft or persons inside".

She will appear at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on October 29.
