What’s new: A passenger train traveling from Jinan to Guangzhou derailed on Monday, leaving one person dead, four severely injured and 123 with minor injuries, according to an afternoon report from People’s Daily.
After multiple days of rain, a landslide occurred on the southbound section of rail between Matianxu and Qifengdu stations in Hunan province on the Beijing-Guangzhou line. The driver of the T179 train bound for Guangzhou took emergency breaking measures upon discovering the landslide, but the train still hit the rubble, causing the first car to catch fire and the second to sixth cars to derail.
Background: The accident is one of the worst on China’s rail system since the 2011 Wenzhou crash, which authorities say killed 40 and injured more than 100.
