Passenger slams Edinburgh ScotRail ticket that costs more than train around Europe

A disgruntled ScotRail passenger has hit out at the firm charging eye-watering prices for trains.

It comes after the travel operator revealed they were cracking down on fare dodgers, with one shameless passenger ordered to cough up more than £2,000 after taking 53 journeys without buying a ticket during the pandemic.

With ticket barriers in place at just 17 stations across Scotland, some people may think it's easy to get off without paying but ScotRail has CCTV cameras that can prove where journeys began.

However, some passengers have challenged ScotRail, arguing that people shouldn't have to pay the prices they do for the operator's services.

One person blasted: "Got to be the worse rail service in Britain, toilets howling WiFi never works, vastly overpriced compared to other European countries and adverse weather is rain apparently. And you expect people to pay."

ScotRail responded: "Rail travel isn't free I'm afraid. Would you visit a restaurant and leave without paying? Which route do you travel on?"

In light of this, one passenger shared a shocking find, comparing a one-month season ticket between Edinburgh and Glasgow, which is around 47 miles, to a three-month Interrail pass around Europe, which allows passengers to travel to 33 countries.

While a ticket for just one month between two cities will set you back £409 with ScotRail, multiple trains around Europe for three whole months costs just under £600 - which works out at £200 a month.

The tweet has racked up over 2,000 likes, with one writing: "The cost of a one-month season ticket for all of the Netherlands is £308 for train only and £360 including all trains, buses, trams and metros."

"And they wonder why people actively fare dodge. Always amazed when I go abroad how much cheaper it is and how much better the service and train cars are", said another.
