Passenger plane diverted to Edinburgh as pilot declares mid-air emergency

A passenger plane has been diverted to Edinburgh after declaring a mid-air emergency.

The Scandinavian Airlines flight between Sweden and Ireland sounded the 7700 squawk code as it took a swift turn over Fife.

The aircraft had been due to arrive in Dublin at 11.10am, Edinburgh Live reports.

The vessel is, however, now set to land in the capital following the unknown incident.

Emergency crews will be on standby to assist staff and passengers.

The 7700 code is used to denote an incident requiring on the ground support while the plane is in the air.

An Edinburgh Airport source confirmed the diversion was due to a medical issue on board, however the nature of the incident remains unclear.

Passengers are now set to disembark from the Airbus A320 in Edinburgh before continuing onward to their destination.

Scandinavian Airlines has been approached for comment.
