Passenger killed, driver injured while in charity car rally

Crash probe: The Crash Investigation Unit from Tamworth is examining the cause of the accident.

THE man killed in a rollover crash near Tamworth on Thursday afternoon was participating in a charity rally that was due to finish on Friday.

The 44-year-old driver remains in a serious condition in Tamworth hospital being treated for multiple fractures, while his passenger, a 49-year-old man, died at the scene near Manilla.

The pair were competing in the Riverina Redneck Rally and were en route from Warialda to Nundle on Thursday.

Crash investigators from Tamworth have taken charge of the crash probe and are investigating why the car left the road, rolled several times before hitting a tree.

The accident happened shortly after 1pm on Thursday on Banoon Road at Borah Creek, about 80km north west of Tamworth.

Emergency services rushed to the site but the passenger died at the scene. Paramedics assisted the 44-year-old driver for multiple injuries and he was taken to Tamworth hospital, where he remains.

The crash occurred on a dirt road, but it was not raining at the time. Crash investigators spent much of Thursday night at the scene examining the roadway and the wreckage.

Investigations are continuing and a report is being prepared for the coroner.

The Redneck Rally is a fundraiser for Country Hope, which raises money for Country Hope, a rural organisation helping kids with cancer and serious illnesses. The rally start on March 1 and was due to finish on Friday in Port Stephens.
