Passenger hell as Aer Lingus flight from Dublin Airport delayed to Washington D.C as crazy lightning storm causes weather havoc in USA

A flight from Dublin to Washington D.C was forced to divert to Ottawa on Thursday night and had to stay overnight due to adverse weather conditions.

Aer Lingus passengers on the Flight EI119 expressed their anger on Twitter after they had to stay in the Canadian capital landing there at 3:40pm, the same time they had been due to arrive in Washington.

Passengers were frantically tweeting the airline on Thursday and Friday looking for updates on the delay with some extremely dissatisfied with the service.

One angry passenger said: "Please advise (and actually respond) how we should claim back for the flight delay for EI119, the expenses incurred during our unexpected visit to Canada and my time / missed wedding."

A family member of a passenger commented: "Family member on flight ei119 from Dublin to Washington. Diverted to Ottawa due to storms. Sitting on runway now for 4 hours after a 7 hour flight. No food, no water, no heat #neveragain."

A spokeswoman for Aer Lingus told Dublin Live: "Aer Lingus can confirm that flight EI 119 from Dublin to Washington, D.C. on Thursday 11 July was diverted to Ottawa, Canada due to adverse weather conditions at Washington, D.C.

"Due to persistent adverse weather in both Washington, D.C. and Ottawa regions, it was not possible to continue the flight onwards and the flight was cancelled.

"Guests were provided with overnight accommodation in Ottawa and with meal vouchers.

"A recovery flight EI 2119 will bring guests onward to Washington, D.C. today, 12 July departing Ottawa at 16:00 local and arriving at 17:35 local time.

"Subsequently EI 118 from Washington, D.C. to Dublin on 11 July was cancelled. Guests were provided overnight accommodation and meal vouchers. Currently guests are being re-routed back to Dublin tonight, 12 July, on EI 118 and being rebooked via other airlines and gateways.
