Passenger escapes uninjured as emergency services called to car fire on the A1 in Morpeth

A dramatic photo shows a torched car on the side of the A1 in Northumberland after police were called to a vehicle fire.

Emergency services were called to a car fire on the A1 southbound next to Eshott Airfield in Northumberland shortly before 1pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Both Northumbria Police and the North East Ambulance Service were called to the scene where a passenger was checked over by paramedics.

Fortunately, the passenger was uninjured and police confirmed the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 1pm today (Tuesday) we received a report of a car on fire on the A1 southbound next to Eshott Airfield.

"The passenger was checked over by paramedics and uninjured.

"The fire is not being treated as suspicious."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a vehicle fire on the A1 southbound around the Morpeth area at 12.47pm today.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew who assessed one patient at the scene but who did not require treatment."
