Passenger distracted by phone walks off platform into path of oncoming train

A train passenger narrowly escaped death after walking straight off a platform straight in front on an oncoming train.

The woman appeared to be distracted by her mobile phone as she gets up to wait for a train as it pulls into the station.

The shocking incident was captured on CCTV at the Estrecho metro station in Madrid, Spain.

In the video, a train begins pulling into the platform and the woman gets up and walks towards with edge.

With her eyes glued to her phone the woman, who has not been identified, does not stop, instead walking straight off the platform and onto the tracks.

The video cuts off, showing the woman cowering in terror as the train approaches.

Madrid Metro confirmed that the passenger was not injured in the incident and was rescued from the tracks.

But they are now sharing the footage online in a bid to warn passengers about the dangers of being distracted by a mobile phone.

It is not known whether the train managed to stop or whether the woman got trapped underneath.

In an online post, Madrid Metro wrote: "Not looking up from your mobile phone while you are waiting for the metro is a distraction which could turn out costly.”

The video was shared with the message: “For your security, look up from your mobile phone when you are walking on the platform”.

Viewers were in two minds over the footage. While some criticised the woman for being distracted, others implied the train companies should shoulder the responsibility.

One wrote: "What you have to do on the subway is to put safety screens on the platforms at all stations to avoid such accidents."

But another disagreed, writing: "The day they start to fine people for walking and getting in the way while looking at their phone will be a great day."
