Passenger dies after van crashes with lorry on M62

A man in his 30s has died after a van collided with a lorry on the M62 yesterday (Monday) morning.

The crash happened on the westbound carriageway between junction 23 and 22, near Stott Hall Farm, at around 7.40am.

An air ambulance was forced to land on the motorway before airlifting the casualty - a passenger in a VW Transporter van - to Leeds General Infirmary.

The man sadly died later in hospital, police have confirmed.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "As a result of the incident a passenger in the van died. The man, in his 30s, from outside of West Yorkshire died in hospital."

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The force spokesperson said: "Any witnesses to the collision to who saw debris in the carriageway before the incident is asked to call police on 101 quoting log 282 of today."

All lanes on the westbound carriageway between junction 24 and junction 22 were closed at around 8.30am for the air ambulance to land.

Traffic was blocked from joining the motorway at junction 23 for Outlane and junction 24 for Huddersfield.

Motorists caught in the stationary queues behind the accident were ushered off the motorway via a makeshift exit slip road under Scammonden Bridge.

They then rejoined the M62 on the eastbound side and headed back towards junction 23.

The motorway reopened at around 2.30pm.
