Passenger describes terror of Bedford train crash: ‘People were crying and screaming’

  • A train crash near Bedford on Friday, around 5.15 pm, resulted in the death of a driver and injuries to over 80 people.
  • The collision involved two East Midlands Railway services: the 4.40pm from Corby to London St Pancras and the 3.50pm from Nottingham to London St Pancras.
  • Passenger Dr Pete Knapp described being “flung” into the seat in front and hearing “people crying, screaming”, some suffering broken legs.
  • “My first thought was I needed to get out of the train just in case it was a terrorist explosion, I thought it was safer to get off the train,” he said.
  • Paramedics confirmed one fatality, 11 people with "very serious" injuries, 22 with "serious" injuries, and a further 56 hurt, prompting local hospitals to declare a major incident.
