FA confirm Pascal Struijk red card appeal decision after Harvey Elliott injury

Leeds United have confirmed that their appeal to have Pascal Struijk's red card overturned has been rejected by the Football Association.

Struijk’s challenge resulted in Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott being stretchered off with a dislocated ankle during Sunday’s game at Elland Road.

Both sets of players appeared in distress after the tackle was made, with Mohamed Salah one of the first to draw attention to the severity of the on-field incident.

While Reds boss Jurgen Klopp confirmed after his side’s 3-0 win over that Elliott had sustained what he described as a 'bad injury'.

However, Leeds still made the decision on Monday to appeal the red card referee Craig Pawson showed to Struijk during the second half of the game with Elliott writing on Instagram that he believed it was not a red card.

But following a review by the FA, Leeds have now confirmed that their appeal has been unsuccessful and Struijk will now serve a three-game ban.

“We can confirm that our appeal against Pascal Struijk’s red card has been unsuccessful,” a statement from the Elland Road club read.

“Pascal will miss our next three games against Newcastle United, Fulham (Carabao Cup) and West Ham United.

“We will make no further comment at this time.”

Liverpool confirmed on Tuesday that Elliott has now undergone successful surgery on his ankle and club doctor Jim Moxon suggested that the teenager could be back in action before the end of the season.

"Harvey sustained a fracture dislocation of his left ankle during the game,” Moxon said.

“We were able to reduce the dislocation immediately on the pitch and Harvey had surgery today to repair the fracture and ligaments damaged in the incident. The operation was a success so his comeback starts now.

“We won’t put pressure on him by setting a specific timeframe beyond being able to say with confidence we expect him to feature again later in the season following our rehab programme.”
