Pascal Struijk breaks silence on his Leeds United struggle against Aston Villa

Pascal Struijk says he will learn from his difficult experience in Leeds United's Premier League clash with Aston Villa.

The young midfielder was given the job of filling the boots of the injured Kalvin Phillips for Friday's showdown at Villa Park.

It did not go according to plan for Struijk, who was booked early on and then substituted by concerned head coach Marcelo Bielsa with only 21 minutes on the clock.

The game was goalless at the time, before a second-half hat-trick by Patrick Bamford inspired Leeds to an impressive 3-0 victory.

Explaining his decision to make the early change, Bielsa said: "Pascal picked up an early yellow card and after this yellow card he had another foul which was a dangerous one.

"There was a lot of mobility in the midfield, it was very dynamic and it was very easy for anyone to make a challenge out of time so as a result I was worried and made the substitution."

While it was a night to forget for Struijk from a personal point of view, the 21-year-old has responded with a classy message on Instagram.

"I’ll learn from this," he said. "Great team performance and congratulations @patrick_bamford with the (hat-trick) #MOT".

Struijk can take heart from the fact that Phillips suffered a similar fate in his fourth match under Bielsa, which ended with a first-half substitution after the Leeds-born midfielder picked up an early yellow and looked on edge against Swansea City in August 2018.

A couple of years later and Phillips is a full England international and a key part of the Leeds side.

On Friday, it was the turn of Struijk to be taken out of the firing line - and he will be hoping to respond in the same manner as his team-mate.
