Pascal Chimbonda on the 'big regret' that cost him Man Utd transfer

Pascal Chimbonda admits the manner in which he left Wigan may have cost him a move to Manchester United.

The Frenchman was a star as the Latics enjoyed a hugely successful first season in the top flight.

His performances earned him a spot in the PFA Team of the Year as well France's World Cup squad.

But after losing to Arsenal 4-2 on the final day of the season he handed in a transfer request while still wearing the club kit.

And with the benefit of hindsight Chimbonda feels his conduct may have cost him a chance to play for United.

"That’s my biggest regret. That changed a lot of things," he told The Athletic.

"If I didn’t do what I did then maybe I would have joined Manchester United. But when I made this mistake, I threw my chance away. Man Utd didn’t want to sign someone who would do this.

"Wigan were so mad, they didn’t say anything to me. At the end of the game I gave a written letter to the manager in the dressing room, and he opened it in front of everyone. I wasn’t even showered yet.

"The chairman was there too and I thought “what have I done?” What a stupid thing to do. We were supposed to meet on the Monday, but I was told the manager doesn’t want to see you. Just go on holiday.

"That’s my big regret. If I could go back in time, I wouldn’t do this."

Chimbonda went on to join Tottenham where he spent two years, during which he lost the League Cup final to the Red Devils.

He also had spells at the likes of Sunderland, Blackburn and Rangers.
