Partygoers who pleaded ignorance fined more than $6,000 for breaching coronavirus rules

Acting Superintendent Jason Overland said the fines served as a warning.

Five young people on Queensland's Sunshine Coast have been hit with more than $6,000 in fines over a noisy party overnight.

Police said the group was using a room at a hotel in Maroochydore.

Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the hotel reported the gathering to police.

"Five local people have decided to book a room at a hotel and have a party," she said.

"Thankfully the management of that hotel contacted police, and all five people have been issued with an infringement notice.

"That is an example of reckless and blatant disregard for what we are trying to achieve here.

"So can I please ask, and I should have to ask all the time, that people actually do comply with the rules."

Each person was fined $1334.50 for breaching directions given by Queensland's Chief Health Officer.

Acting Superintendent Jason Overland said the group was "wilfully, recklessly and selfishly" ignoring the rules.

"These young people claim to have no knowledge of the pandemic or the directions to maintain social distancing," Superintendent Overland said.

He said after a month of reminding the public of the need for social distancing, the incident served as a warning that police would be handing out fines and punishments to those who break the rules.

This morning Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said a further nine Queenslanders had been diagnosed with coronavirus since yesterday, taking the state's total to 943.
