Party turns ugly as woman, 65, is 'dragged along under a car' in Gateshead street

A 65-year-old woman was taken to hospital by ambulance after a Bensham party turned ugly - and she ended up being "dragged along under a car".

The incident unfolded on Ridsdale Court on Saturday night after a "disturbance" at the event.

An altercation is said to have unfolded between the woman and a man, who Northumbria Police believe she knew.

"The man has got into a car at which point it was alleged that the woman has continued to remonstrate with him through the open window," said a force spokesperson.

"It was reported that the man has then driven the vehicle away, causing the woman to fall to the floor."

An onlooker claimed around "five police cars and two ambulances" descended on the Gateshead street.

"We were called to Ridsdale Court in Bensham at 20.09 on Saturday night where a woman had been dragged along under a car," said a North East Ambulance Service spokesperson.

"An ambulance and two HART vehicles were sent to the scene and the patient was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital."

A police spokesperson added the woman was taken to hospital as a precaution, adding she "was not seriously injured."

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Nobody has been arrested.
