Party starts in Italy as Azzurri restores reputation

Italy's penalties victory over England in the Euro 2020 final sparked wild scenes across the nation into the night.

Roberto Mancini's side emerged victorious at Wembley to earn a first major trophy since the 2006 World Cup.

Exuberant scenes of celebration were seen across the country notably in Rome’s Piazza del Popolo and Milan’s Piazza del Duomos.

It's been quite a turnaround for the nation, who failed to even qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Mancini, who managed Manchester City between 2009 and 2013, was credited for the reversal of the team's fortunes.

"Great recognition to Roberto Mancini and our players – they have represented Italy well and given honour to sport," said Italian president Sergio Mattarella, who watched the game from the royal box at Wembley.

The team's Twitter account, meanwhile, praised Mancini for achieving a "blue renaissance".

The Italian press were also quick to praise 56-year old Mancini for what he has achieved.

The team is on a remarkable run of 34 games unbeaten under his guidance.

La Repubblica’s website showed Mancini and his players celebrating with the headline "Europe Is Ours".

La Gazzetta dello Sport, meanwhile compared President Mattarella to predecessor Sandro Pertini, whose similar celebrations Madrid's royal box in Madrid at the 1982 became one of the enduring images of that tournament.

Another newspaper, Il Messaggero, praised Mancini and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who saved two penalties, saying he had hypnotised Wembley and that the pair had together “signed off” Italy’s victory.
