'Party search' as 17 student houses visited by police after neighbours 'hell'

Police have been targeting student parties and antisocial behaviour in parts of south Liverpool after a surge of complaints.

The ECHO has been reporting on rising problems in areas like Wavertree and Mossley Hill, with residents describing living through 'hell' as students party round the clock to celebrate the end of term and lockdown.

Frustrated residents and local politicians have been calling for more action to tackle the explosion in antisocial behaviour and last night the police stepped up their patrols in the Wavertree area.

The force posted a number of images, taken in the early hours of this morning, on twitter of officers attending properties in the area, with several appearing to be hosting parties.

The MerPol South Liverpool account tweeted: "During the early hours #AdmiralSt Community Team, Liverpool Safer&Stronger Communities and Environmental Health joined by Paula Barker MP patrolled the #SmithdownRd#Picton#Greenbank#Wavertree areas to proactively tackle ASB, Covid breaches and loud parties. 17 addresses visited."

News of increased patrols and action will be welcomed by local residents.

Ms Barker, the MP for the Wavertree area has been speaking out on these issues for some time and joined police on their patrols.

She said: "I recently held a meeting in my constituency office with Police Inspector David Uren.

"I was pleased to hear confirmation that the police have now had two weeks of greater active enforcement.

"This, of course, is a work in progress but includes patrolling locations identified as problematic to residents as well as directly challenging noisy and loud parties.

"Alongside this, council departments have assured me that legislation will be used to tackle noise breaches.

"This also follows the story covered by the Echo recently regarding council officers knocking on student doors in areas where we have persistent problems.

"I am pleased that, finally, these matters are being taken seriously.

"The academic term is at an end and in the coming week, many students will be heading home for the Summer.

"Whilst stuff is happening to hopefully improve the situation for residents, we will only know whether such measures have truly been successful come the start of the new term in the Autumn. As a Member of Parliament, I have no powers in this area but will continue to do all I can in speaking up for my constituents and their communities."

The ECHO has been covering a number of stories involving antisocial behaviour by students in areas of south Liverpool.

The latest was an account of a couple living in Langton Street in the Picton area of Wavertree, who said that they had their door 'aggressively' banged down by students who were angry that the couple had been making noise complaints, claiming this had got them evicted from their property."
