Party on the M5 as drivers trapped in storm start dancing on carriageway

Sweltering motorists stuck on the M5 in 30C heat after a fuel spill came up with a novel way of passing the time – to have an impromptu party.

Drivers ended up stuck on the M5 during thunderstorms last night (August 12) due to a spill of diesel between junction 18 for Avonmouth and junction 19 for Portishead.

The large diesel spillage is believed to have happened after a lorry broke down.

To pass the time stranded travellers got out of their cars and held their own impromptu party on the asphalt.

Amid a thunderous backdrop with dark ominous clouds and lightning in the distance, people played music from their cars and tried to enjoy themselves.

In videos posted online, travellers can be seen dancing on the closed carriageway, with one woman providing an impressive rendition of It's Raining Men by The Weather Girls.

Highways England shut the southbound carriageway at around 8pm after a lorry spilt fuel across the road.

The large diesel spillage is believed to have happened after a lorry broke down.

Firefighters and police were also sent to the scene as the road was closed until 1.30am on Thursday (August 13).
