Parts of Stockport town centre could be closed to vehicles - or see access time limits - as bosses aim to make 'area like York or Chester'

New plans have been drawn up to pedestrianise Stockport town centre streets.

The proposals would see access to certain town centre streets - like Market Place and Underbank - by car subject to limit limits.

Other stretches could be cut off from cars completely.

Those roads which could be sealed off include Mealhouse Brow and St Petersgate to through traffic.

The scheme is currently out for consultation — and a councillor representing the area says she is keen to hear from residents who don’t agree with the plans.

“The ultimate aim is to have an area like York or Chester, there’s no reason why we cannot have that with the heritage we have,” councillor Becky Crawford told the Manchester Evening News.

“Pedestrianisation is a step to that.

“It is a big piece of work — that’s why the consultation is in-depth. I would like to hear from people who are not sure — blue badge holders, residents, business owners.

“It is really important that as many people get back to us from as many walks of life.”

The Labour representative for the Brinnington and Central ward added: “It is a plan under consultation. If people can get through to it and say ‘we are not sure’ the plan can be adapted.

“It is a big change, that is what we need to do to move the town forward — big changes.

“And, we need residents to do that.”

Should the scheme be approved, a variety of time-limited road closures will be in place in and around the tight streets of Underbank and Market Place.

A full list of the road closures can be found on the council’s website.

The consultation is open until October 24, and residents can have their say online, via phone (0161 474 2299) or on email (marketsunderbanksaccessplan@stockport.gov.uk).
