A SHOPPING centre has been forced to close and roads shut due to giant hailstones, severe rainfall and mudslides in parts of Scotland.
Unseasonal weather hit parts of Scotland on Thursday following a yellow alert issued by the Met Office for thunderstorms, heavy downpours and strong winds.
The north and east of Scotland face some disruption due to the weather, with shoppers told to leave the Overgate centre in Dundee after water started pouring down ramps to the front of the building.
Malcolm Angus, Overgate centre manager, told STV News: “We have experienced what feels like six months of rain falling in ten minutes.
“Overgate’s drainage is connected to the city’s main drainage system. The city’s system has been overwhelmed, and as a result, the sheer volume of water has come back into Overgate.”
Giant hailstones, around the size of a 50p coin, also blasted the city, along with heavy downpour, which forced some roads to close in the city centre due to flooding.
Parts of Aberdeenshire were also hit by large hailstorms, with a section of the A97 closed due to a mudslide.
Videos and pictures on social media showed Aberdeenshire transformed into a winter-like wonderland as the streets were covered in hailstones which looked like snow.
Elsewhere, Police Scotland said the A97 Dinnet to Glenbuchat road was closed in both directions between Logie Coldstone and the junction with the B9119, Tarland Road, following a mudslide.
