Parts of Renfrewshire hit with a "monsoon-like" deluge as weather experts issue rain warnings

Paisley has been plunged into "monsoon-like" conditions this afternoon with heavy rainfall hitting parts of Renfrewshire.

One Buddie, who got caught in the downpour while driving, said: "It was quite a downpour just before 4pm and came down in minutes.

"Drains were blocked, roads flooded and driving conditions were treacherous.

"It was like monsoon conditions for a while and couldn't have come down any heavier if it tried. It seems like the drains couldn't cope."

Linwood Toll Roundabout, near Aldi, often overflows in particularly wet weather and this afternoon was no different - as our pictures show.

The Met Office forecast for Strathclyde today says: "Persistent rain, occasionally heavy, developing across the south and east overnight.

"A mainly dry night across the north with the odd shower along the west coast. Mild. Minimum temperature 11 °C."

Met Office chief meteorologist Paul Gundersen, said “The rain is likely to become more showery and less persistent, albeit still heavy at times, during Thursday night and perhaps Friday morning, with a separate warning still in force at that time.

“These amounts of rainfall present a real threat of flooding and people should keep a close eye on flood warnings from the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales and SEPA.

"There may be some disruption to transport, with some difficult driving conditions and possible road closures. Stay up to date with the forecast in your area on the Met Office website or via our mobile app.”

Drivers should note that the expert advice for getting behind the wheel in heavy rain is if the road is flooded, turn around and find another route.

The number one cause of death during flooding is driving through flood water, so the safest advice is turn around, don't drown.
