Parts of Merseyside set to go under water as flood warnings issued after Storm Ciara

Parts of Merseyside will go under water as flood warnings are issued after Storm Ciara.

The region has been battered by rain and strong winds for the last two days and it seems the are set to continue.

New Brighton, Hoylake, Leasowe and parts of Warrington could face severe problems when huge waves will break over sea defences on Tuesday.

The Environment Egency has issued a number of alerts for Merseyside and flood warnings for areas of Warrington along the River Mersey.

In a statement, the government organisation said that huge waves in Wallasey could cause roads to flood.

They said: "Waves are forecast to overtop sea defences at Wallasey with sea spray expected as a result of high spring tides and strong winds.

"Consequently flooding of low lying land, roads and farmland is possible between 00:00 and 01:30 tomorrow, 11/02/20.

"We believe there is a possibility of flooding for low lying land and roads at the head of the Wirral from Hoylake to New Brighton, including parts of Leasowe and Wallasey.

"Coastal conditions are expected to continue until after the high tides at 11:30 on 11/02/20 at Wallasey.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are closely monitoring weather forecasts and river levels and will issue (further) flood warnings if necessary.

"Please be careful along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous."

Three warnings have also been issued for the Mersey Estuary in Warrington, at Arpley Bridge, Fiddlers Ferry and Victoria Park.

For a number of areas flooding is expected to be just as bad as the Warrington floods in January 2014.

The Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning for ice and snow for parts of the country, on Wednesday, including  Warrington and  Widnes.

From midnight on Wednesday until 12 noon the weather warning will remain in place with the forecaster predicting disruption to transport.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services

"Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

"Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths."
