Parts of World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park are closed to tourists until further notice following the death of a senior Aboriginal leader.
Parks Australia acknowledged prominent East Alligator region traditional owner M Na-gangila Bangalang's recent death.
"The director of national parks and Kakadu National Park staff extend their heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of this very important man at this time of great sadness," a spokesman said in a statement on Tuesday.
Out of our respect for Mr Na-gangila Bangalang, the East Alligator River has been closed to visitors.
This respected cultural practice and the wishes of native title holders, the spokesman said.
The closed areas include the rock art at Ubirr and upstream and downstream boat ramps.
Murrwan man Mr Na-gangila Bangalang was a member of the Kakadu National Park Board of Management.
