Parts of Ireland that could see and hear the world's largest plane hum above them as it arrives in Shannon Airport today

The world's largest plane will zip across Irish skies this afternoon before landing in Shannon Airport.

The six-engine Antonov An-225 ‘Mriya’ left Baku this morning and is expected to land in Ireland at around 2pm.

The plane, similar in size to Croke Park, is currently heading over Europe and will be visible over Ireland from 1pm until it lands.

While it is extremely cloudy in many parts of the country, even if the plane is not visible you should be able to hear it.

The aircraft is known for its distinctive humming sound and those around Shannon Airport will definitely hear it.

For others around the country, you too could be lucky enough that the flight's route goes straight above you.

The expected Antonov route today (Flight Radar)

The expected route is for the plane to come in over Ireland around Wicklow or Wexford and then head in a straight line for Shannon.

That means parts of Kilkenny, Tipperary, Laois, Offaly, Limerick and Clare should all see the plane above.

Even if you are further away you would be able to get a glimpse if skies happen to clear up in time.

A map from Flight Radar shows the expected route of the aircraft so you can see if you are anywhere near it.
