Parts of Chennai likely to get light rain in next 2 days: IMD

CHENNAI: The city’s weather station at Nungambakkam has received more than 16cm excess rainfall so far this June-September season.

While weathermen have forecast light/moderate rain for the coming days, bloggers said rain has taken a break from the city and suburbs for the rest of the week as southwest monsoon has become active on the western parts of the country. For the next 48 hours, IMD forecast, “Light/ moderate rain to occur in some areas and the sky condition likely to be partly cloudy. Maximum and minimum temperature will be around 34°C and 25°C.”

A meteorologist said rain in parts of the city and suburbs occurred in the few evenings mostly due to wind convergence leading to convective activity before a low pressure formed near north Andhra coast and pulled away all the winds. On Monday too, thunderstorms moved into the city leaving a burst of rainfall in many west parts of the city and a few core localities.

“But the low pressure has moved deep into the land. Monsoon is active again and the western parts of the country like Mumbai have been receiving rains. This means, rain will take a break in Chennai and neighbouring districts as well as most parts of the state,” an official said.

As on Tuesday, Nungambakkam has recorded 502.9mm, an excess of 163.6mm so this far this June-September season. Meenambakkam has registered 423.9mm, an excess of 47mm during the same period. Chennai subdivision has recorded 426.1mm against a normal 355.9mm leaving an excess of 20% rainfall.

Blogger Pradeep John said there may be a dry spell for the rest of the week and the next round of rainfall may begin only next week. “On Wednesday, there is a slight possibility of rain. But good chances of rainfall are only from next week when there may be short spells in parts of the city and suburbs every few days. Chances are high we may cross 600mm this June-September season,” he said.
