Partners in life and in crime: The couples who broke the law together

Couples are expected to stick together through thick and thin. But these couples went the extra mile, ending up in court after committing crime together.

From drug dealing to shocking animal cruelty and yobbish behaviour in the street, their cases vary greatly in seriousness.

But all of them were partners in crime as well as in life - and found themselves together in the dock.

Rashid Hussain and Szenm Asghar

Husband and wife Rashid Hussain and Szenm Asghar sat in the dock beside each other as the pair were both jailed for drug dealing. Their marital home was raided as part of a police operation in Rochdale.

The couple were involved in a cocaine and heroin racket, dealing using the 'Sniper' drugs line in the town. Huge amounts of cash and luxury goods were found at their home.

More than £20,000 in cash, designer clothes for men and women worth almost £18,000, and a number of Rolex watches were seized. Hussain, 35, was claiming Universal Credit, while Asghar, 37, told police she'd previously worked for the DWP and in corporate banking.

A notebook found on their dining room table gave police an indication of the dealing the couple were involved in. It revealed they had received at least £34,000 in income from their racket over a six week period.

After being arrested, Asghar said she'd been in a relationship with Hussain for two years. She said she knew he was unemployed but 'didn't know where he got his money from'.

Her barrister told the court she'd acted out of 'misguided loyalty to her husband'. In November, Hussain was jailed for seven-and-a-half years, and Asghar for three years and four months.

Hussain admitted possessing criminal property, and two counts of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs. Asghar pleaded guilty to participating in the activities of an organised crime group, two counts of possession of criminal property and two counts of possession of class A drugs with intent to supply.

Reece Davies and Tara McKenna

Reece Davies and Tara McKenna ended up in court after they 'took the law into their own hands'. The couple chased a man and his girlfriend with a machete and a lump of wood with screws in it.

They believed Callum Holden was responsible for stabbing Davies in front of their young daughter in February 2019. Weeks later, Mr Holden was getting out of his girlfriend Jessica Williams' car in Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire, when Davies emerged running towards the vehicle.

Davies, 31, kicked the wing mirror but as Ms Williams drove away she saw Davies holding a machete. She heard him shout 'you're a dead man' at her boyfriend.

Mr Holden ran to his mother's house, chased by Davies. As Ms Williams got out of the car, Tara McKenna, 28, approached her, making threats.

"(Holden) managed to shake off the defendant but during the chase the two women were left in the street", prosecutors said. McKenna pulled a piece of wood with screw sticking out of it from a bag and began swinging at Ms Williams.

As Ms Williams blocked the swings, the two women fell to the floor. Reece Davies and Tina McKenna then punched Ms Williams. Witnesses rushed to help, saying the police were on their way, and Davies and McKenna picked up their weapons and ran - shouting threats as they fled.

In October, the defendants, of Mickleden Road, Blackpool, were sentenced to eight months in prison suspended for 12 months and were ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work each. Reece Davies must also pay £1,000 compensation to Ms Williams.

Chantelle Duvall-Gregory and Christy Carl-Hewitt

Chantelle Duvall-Gregory and Christy Carl-Hewitt ended up in court after they showed shocking cruelty towards their dog. The pair put the animal through months of abuse before dumping its body by a river.

They punched, kicked, and stamped on their two-year-old Belgian Shepherd, Snoop, before it died after being given a granola bar which had raisins in. Its body was found locked inside a suitcase by a dog walker near the Speke and Garston Nature Reserve in Merseyside in January last year.

Duvall-Gregory, 20, was traced after her name was found printed on the side of the bright pink suitcase. The abuse is said to have taken place between April 1 and December 22, 2021 at the couple's former home on Winfield Road, Garston, Liverpool.

The court heard it was determined Snoop had died of haemorrhagic gastroenteritis after eating a granola bar with raisins given to it by Duvall-Gregory. The pair pleaded guilty to inflicting blunt force trauma, physical violence and abusive behaviour on the Belgian Shepherd, to failing to provide an adequate diet, and to failing to take him to a vet when necessary. They also pleaded guilty to one count of breaching their duties as people responsible for ensuring the welfare of an animal.

Duvall-Gregory, of no fixed address, was sentenced to 22 weeks in prison suspended for 18 months. Carl-Hewitt, 21, of Parkfield Road, Aigburth, was locked up for 22 weeks . Both were handed a 10 year disqualification from owning an animal, and cannot apply to appeal this for five years.

Rais Ali and Tiffany Davies

A drug dealing husband and wife were both locked up after police discovered a huge haul of heroin. Rais Ali and Tiffany Davies were caught out when police stopped a vehicle near the M5 in the West Midlands and found Davies inside.

A stash of heroin worth up to £90,000 along with thousands of pounds of cash, was found in her handbag. West Midlands Police said the vehicle was pulled over after officers acted on intelligence.

The force later discovered Davies commuted from Stoke-on-Trent to Smethwick. Investigations by the force's organised crime unit found that Ali had co-ordinated the journey in December 2018. Phone records also revealed that the 34-year-old made three journeys from Staffordshire to Smethwick in November and December.

The couple, both of Josiah Wedgwood Street, Stoke-on-Trent, were convicted of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs. Ali was jailed for 10 years, while Davies was sentenced to four years and four months in prison.
