'It's disappointing': NT Police officer resigns after breaching coronavirus border requirements

An NT Police officer has resigned and he and his wife have been fined after entering the NT border from Queensland without filling out the proper border paperwork.

An NT Police officer has resigned after entering the NT border from Queensland without completing the appropriate paperwork at the border.

The 27 year-old was with a group of five people heading towards Alice Springs, including his wife, who had entered into the NT from Queensland by road.

The other three in the group have been put into isolation and fined $5,000 after coming from an NT declared coronavirus hotspot.

Deputy NT Police Commissioner Murray Smalpage said his behaviour was "very disappointing".

"The officer resigned today and we are currently conducting a full and thorough investigation into the actions of that officer." he said.

"He and his wife have been issued an infringement for breaching the health officer's directions."

NT Chief Health Officer Dr Hugh Heggie said coronavirus suppression relied upon community cooperation.

"The root cause of outbreaks is people's behaviours," Dr Heggie said.

"We have people in Australia who are testing positive and who aren't at home when they should be. That concerns me."

All arrivals into the Northern Territory from declared coronavirus hotspots (Victoria, Greater Sydney, Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Port Stephens, Eurobodalla Shire) must quarantine for two weeks at a government-approved facility.

New coronavirus case confirmed

It comes after NT health authorities said the female partner of a man who tested positive to coronavirus on Friday had now also tested positive to the virus.

The family arrived in Darwin from Melbourne on Friday on Jetstar flight JQ 678, which departed Melbourne at 9:15am and arrived in Darwin at 1:10pm.

The woman's partner found out he had tested positive while he was on the flight, and went straight into isolation at the Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH).

Authorities on Friday said the man was wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) on the plane and was asymptomatic during the flight.

Since the family's arrival the woman had been under the care of RDH in isolation.

The family was returning to Darwin after accompanying a person who had gotten essential medical care in Melbourne.

There have been 34 cases of coronavirus diagnosed in the NT, and all have been related to international or interstate travel, with no cases of community transmission.

The flight was the only Jetstar flight on the Melbourne-Darwin route on Friday.

The NT Health Department said contact tracing on the flight had been completed.

The case is the second to be diagnosed in the NT since a US marine tested positive on July 10.
