Partick Thistle swoop for East Kilbride star defender as midfielder heads for exit

East Kilbride boss Stevie Aitken is resigned to losing defender Steven Bell to Partick Thistle, and midfielder Paul Paton has knocked back a new deal to sign elsewhere.

Bell and Paton were on loan last season at Thistle and Airdrie, respectively, after Kilby's season was curtailed,

Both impressed, with Bell helping Ian McCall's side win the League One title, while Paton's Airdrie just missed out on the play-off finals.

It's likely that Paton will continue his career with the Diamonds.

Aitken said: "Steven Bell is going to sign with Partick Thistle, we believe, and Paul Paton has knocked back the contract that has been offered and he'll be playing his football elsewhere.

"They're good pros, they've got options, and in both circumstances they want to go and play elsewhere.

"We wish them all the best, they've been great to work with, and we might catch up with them in the near future.

"We worked hard last year to bring Paul Paton and Chris Erskine in, and unfortunately the plan we had changed with Covid, we didn't have a chance to fulfil that, so they went back out and played.

"They've got teams higher up talking to them, and all we could do was offer what we can do, in terms of finances, and where we are.

"They've been great to work with, and if they can find their football elsewhere then we wish them all the best."

This comes after East Kilbride signed former Aberdeen striker Lee Miller, and midfielders Chris Millar and Jamie Stevenson.

Aitken says all three will bring a wealth of experience to the club.

He said: "These three guys all played at a top level last season, a level above us, and they're experienced players that will help us in the campaign ahead.

"When you watch them you realise how fit they are, what they can bring, and I'm looking forward to working with them.

"They're good types of people as well, anybody that speaks about them speaks highly and I know them.

"They've played against my teams in the past and I know what they can bring, and they'll all bring different qualities to the team.

"I'm delighted with them, I'm excited about the challenge ahead, and looking forward to getting back into it."

Miller comes from having been assistant manager at Falkirk last season and while Aitken will draw on his experience, he's contracted solely to a playing role.

He said: "We spoke about it and that's all he's interested in. He played a number of games at Falkirk last season and he still feels he has a lot left in him.

"In the shape he's in he certainly has another couple of years left in him.

"He's an experienced player, I'll talk to him and get his views, and I won't shy away from asking his opinion, that's what football's all about."
