Partick Thistle legend Chris Erskine is close to a return to the Maryhill club

East Kilbride star Chris Erskine is back training with former club Partick Thistle ahead of a possible loan move.

The 34 year-old enjoys legendary status at the Maryhill club after making over 200 appearances for the club over two spells.

Erskine left Thistle to join Livingston in January 2019 after falling out of favour with Gary Caldwell but he is set to return to the League One side.

Current Jags manager Ian McCall plucked Erskine from the juniors at 22 years-old in 2009 during his first spell as manager.

It's understood that Thistle made an initial approach to EK about Erskine over the weekend and the club were happy for him to train at Firhill with no imminent return date for the Lowland League.

EK manager Stevie Aitken believes it's important for his players' wellbeing to play football if the opportunity arises and he insists it is the right thing to do.

He said: "With League One and Two clubs restarting on March 20th, the transfer window is still open to bring in loan players.

"They can't sign players on loan from their own division so the Lowland League is a good option for them. Since this option was confirmed, I've had five or six managers on the phone asking about the availability of the players.

"My players are dormant at the moment, they can't train. If we can get them out to play games then they will return to our club when our season restarts - if it comes back.

"It's a win-win situation for East Kilbride. Our players are getting game time and if we start back then they return ready to go.

"It's a bonus for our players because they've been training on their own for the last eight weeks and there is only so much they can do.

"Mentally, it's taking it's toll on the players and it's taking it's toll on me too - it's been tough. This way, we can give our players a release and allow them to get back training in a football environment."
