Partick Thistle and Kilmarnock call for Nicola Sturgeon to scrap fan cap immediately

Hamilton Accies' Championship rivals Partick Thistle and Kilmarnock have urged First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to scrap the 500 fan limit on football matches immediately.

The current limit is set to be lifted on Monday when the Scottish Government's current Covid restrictions on large gatherings end.

But Partick, who play Killie in a live BBC clash on Friday night at Firhill, have requested the restrictions on fans are lifted now.

Hamilton Accies are due to travel to Dunfermline on Saturday and a large crowd would normally be expected for the clash at East End Park.

The match has sold out its 500 tickets and no away fans are currently permitted.

Should the current restrictions be lifted, it would also be a major boost for the likes of Airdrieonians, who welcome Falkirk in League One on Saturday. Fellow Lanarkshire outfit Clyde travel to Petethead in the same division, while Albion Rovers travel to Elgin City in League Two.

Thistle, who drew 2-2 with Accies on Saturday in front of a reduced crowd at New Douglas Park, said in a statement: “Partick Thistle was pleased to hear the good news that restrictions on fan numbers at games are to be removed.

“However, we don’t understand why this hasn’t happened immediately.

“The Premiership restarts on the 17th with full crowds but other leagues, playing as usual this weekend, continue to be disadvantaged for a further three days.

“As well as the significant financial impact on Thistle, this decision means our fans face another game where the majority cannot attend and we cannot welcome opposition fans.

“We have asked the question to see if there is any scope to bring the date forward as we owe it to our fans to try.

“We know it’s a long shot and unlikely to be changed but the right thing to do was to state our case rather than simply accept being disadvantaged again.”

Kilmarnock have seconded the move, with their statement reading: “We welcome and support Partick Thistle's statement and will assist them in any way to try to allow both sets of fans to be at Firhill.”
