Participants sought to create a new major piece of street art in Belfast city centre

Participants are being sought to get involved in creating a new major piece of street art in the heart of Belfast city centre.

Renowned Irish street artist, Joe Caslin, is set to deliver a series of free programmes across the city this summer, leading to the production of the new piece of outdoor public art.

The series of events, titled Counterpart, will explore the past, present, and future of street art across the island of Ireland.

It will begin on Tuesday, June 29, before wrapping up on Saturday, July 3.

Taking place over three sessions, it will give participants the chance to explore the evolution of street art in historical storytelling during a lecture with Professor Bill Rolston, Adam Turkington of Seedhead Arts, and Joe Caslin.

The group will then take part in a street art tour of Belfast, looking at the vast body of artworks already on display in the city.

In the final session, which is a unique, hands-on creative workshop, participants will learn the creative process behind developing large-scale and high-impact pieces of street art.

As well as this, the group will also have the opportunity to help install the final piece of work.

Counterpart is part of Making the Future, a cross-border cultural heritage programme from National Museums NI, Nerve Centre, Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, and Linen Hall Library.

The special events are funded through the PEACE IV programme.

“The scale and subject matter of Joe Caslin’s emotive work, really highlight and encourage dialogue on issues which matter in contemporary Ireland,” said Shauna McGowan, Community Engagement Officer with National Museums NI.

“We are really excited to offer the public this unique opportunity, to work with us alongside Joe on the Counterpart project. The outcome will be the creation of a prominent piece of Art which highlights their voices and reflect issues most important to them.”
