Partially-blind woman, 77, has to 'stumble' around home thanks to stairlift delay

A partially-blind pensioner has to “stumble” around her home after being left without a stairlift for months.

Muriel Griffin said housing association Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH) removed the stairlift from her home in Halewood at the beginning of December as it was "no longer suitable for her needs".

However three months on Muriel is still without a stairlift and fears for her safety as she "stumbles a lot".

The 77-year-old said: “I’m registered partially blind, I have a heart problem, I have COPD.

“I stumble a lot. I have to go upstairs to the toilet, which is the only toilet I’ve got.

"I stumble as I’m going up and coming down.”

Torus, which owns LMH, said it had been unable to source the specialist chairlift itself therefore had asked Liverpool City Council.

However there had been significant delays, which Mrs Griffin said has left her feeling abandoned by Torus.

She added: “I pay my rent regularly.

"It’s disgraceful, I’m just getting neglected.”

A spokesperson for Torus said: “The stairlift in Mrs Griffin’s home was no longer suitable for her needs and needed to be replaced.

“Because Mrs Griffin has impaired vision, a specific model with an audible alert was recommended by her occupational therapist. We were unable to source this specialist replacement through our own suppliers so Liverpool City Council agreed to source it through their own supplier network.

“Unfortunately, there have been significant delays despite the Council requesting frequent updates. We have today been given an estimated delivery of 14 days but have asked to be prioritised in the event of any cancellations.

“The original stair lift was removed at Mrs Griffin’s request to enable her to replace the carpet on her stairs and landing. The delays with the replacement lift were not anticipated at that time.”
