Part of Salford Quays hit by oil spill in area described as 'absolute tip'

Part of Salford Quays appears to have been hit by an oil spill.

A stretch of water at South Bay, between Merchants Quay and Clippers Quay, looks to be affected.

Witnesses first reported seeing oil on the water earlier today (December 23).

Images from the scene appear to show the affected area next to a boat which has been docked.

One witness told the Manchester Evening News the oil spill appeared to be 'getting larger' earlier this afternoon, before it 'spread out'.

Another witness said: "There's a barge in the quay. There's a bit of oil coming from it.

"The entire quay is an absolute tip to be honest, it's horrible. There's so much c*** everywhere."

The area affected is not owned by Salford council.

Developers Urban Waterside told the Manchester Evening News that another company manages the site and it would raise the issue with them - with 'appropriate action' to be taken against those found responsible.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency confirmed that it is yet to have received any reports about the oil spill.

Any witnesses are being urged to contact the Environment Agency hotline on 0800 806070.
