Part of pub collapses into street forcing closure of main Liverpool road

Police have blocked off a major road after an abandoned pub began to collapse this morning.

Vauxhall Road is closed in both directions between the junctions with Gem Street/Barmouth Way and Boundary Street, Vauxhall .

Officers were called to assist after signage and bricks collapsed onto the pavement from the premises of the long closed Athol Vaults pub.

Liverpool Council officers at the scene suggested the road would be closed for some hours while contractors were brought in to make the building safe.

The front elevation of the building, which is in an extremely poor state, appeared to be bulging outwards which had caused wooden sign panels and brickwork to fall onto the pavement.

A police vehicle remained on the scene to divert traffic.

Merseytravel tweeted: "Due to a police incident, Vauxhall road is closed inbound.

"All inbound @arrivanorthwest 54 and 56 services will be diverted via Boundary street and Scotland road until further notice."
