A popular track alongside Lake Burley Griffin will be split into pedestrian and cyclist routes in a bid to make the well-used corridor safer.
The National Capital Authority is encouraging the lakeside path between Rond Terrace and Kings Avenue Bridge to be reserved for pedestrians, and for cyclists to use a shared and bike-only track several metres away.
The "bridge to bridge" route around Lake Burley Griffin is a popular and well-used travel route for commuters and recreation enthusiasts.
An NCA spokesperson said the agency was ensuring the routes remained safe as the number of users increased and lakeside venues grew in popularity.
"The network of paths in the Central Basin area - between Commonwealth Avenue Bridge and Kings Avenue Bridge - was reviewed in this context. This review identified opportunities to improve signage and delineation markers along the route," the spokesperson said.
"The one change being encouraged is the pedestrian-only zone on the northern foreshore from Rond Terrace to Kings Avenue Bridge. In this area there is alternative infrastructure, including a cyclist-only path, in place.
"This change is a response to commentary we receive about user behaviour and aims to improve safety for everyone regardless of mode of active travel.
"Much of these works are aimed at improving awareness of what is already in place - the majority of the route consists of shared paths and we want to encourage users to adopt safe travel behaviours."
The spokesperson said stakeholder workshops were held in July 2026 with key advocacy and recreational user groups of the Central Basin, who expressed support for the plans.
Work began in March 2026 on replacing the shared path signage, with the remaining improvements rolled out from late July 2026. Upgrades are expected to take about two months to implement, depending on the weather.
