Part of major road into Liverpool set to close for a week

Lane closures on the East Lancs Road are set to disrupt commuters starting on Monday with lanes on part of the road set to be closed for a week.

The closures will affect the Pewfall Junction in St Helens with some lanes set to be closed for 24 hours throughout the whole week.

Drivers who use the A58 Stanley Bank Way/Liverpool Road and the A580 East Lancs Road are being advised that several lanes will be closed all of next week to allow electricity and broadband companies to carry out work.

Both the westbound and eastbound filter lanes at the Pewfall Junction will be closed from Monday 18 November until Sunday 24 November.

The work will also close one westbound lane and one eastbound lane to the west and the east of the junction for the whole week.

There will be no access to Stanley Bank Way from the East Lancs Road from 6am on Saturday 23 November until 8pm the following evening.

The work is being carried out as part of the A58/A580 Pewfall Junction Improvement scheme that is being carried out in the New Year.

Works are being carried out until December to allow electricity, Virgin Media, and BT diversion works to be carried out before the Pewfall Junction undergoes further improvements in the new year.

St Helens Council has assured motorists that access to properties and businesses will be maintained at all times.

Pedestrian access will be maintained but there will be a signposted diversion constructed around the roadworks.

A spokesperson for St Helens Council said: "Motorists who use the A580 East Lancs Road are advised that lane closures will be in place next week (18-24 November).

"Weekly closures will be in place until December to allow electricity, Virgin Media, and BT diversion works to be carried out ahead of the A58/A580 Pewfall Junction Improvement scheme which is due to be carried out in the New Year.

"The work is subject to weather conditions, particularly sensitive due to traffic management installation- and road users are advised to take alternative routes where possible, and allow extra journey time to avoid delays.

"Access to properties and businesses will be maintained at all times.

"Pedestrian access will be maintained, however a suitably signed diversion of the existing pathway will be installed around the construction works if needed. "
