Part of M4 Second Severn Crossing will remain closed overnight after lorry driver's death

Part of the Second Severn Crossing on the M4 will remain closed overnight after a lorry crashed into the central reservation.

The bridge has been closed since around 11am after a lorry left the road and ended up on an embankment after crashing into the central reservation.

The lorry driver, from Romania, was airlifted to hospital but has since died .

Highways England said lanes one and two of the eastbound carriageway reopened at around 5.45pm but that the westbound carriageway will remain closed overnight.

This is for vehicle recovery work and repairs to the barriers.

The bridge was closed in both directions to allow the air ambulance to land and for police investigation work after the crash happened on the westbound carriagway.

Highways England said 600m of central and nearside barrier were damaged in the crash, with their teams working throughout the day to clear the debris.

During the closure westbound traffic will continue to be diverted via the M48 Severn Bridge.

The M49 has also been closed in both directions and the northbound M49 carriageway will remain closed until the westbound stretch of M4 has reopened.

Highways England south west operations manager Beverley Mears said: “With a lane closure still in place eastbound and the westbound carriageway closed, this will have an impact on traffic, particularly around the Almondsbury Interchange, and we advise people to allow extra time for their journeys and to consider alternative routes where possible.

“Due to the extent of the barrier damage and the complex nature of the vehicle recovery, we are unable to open the westbound carriageway and this will remain closed throughout the evening peak. We will continue to work hard to reopen this as quickly and as soon as it is safe to do so.”

Gwent Police said it responded to reports that a lorry had "driven down the embankment and onto land alongside the M4 westbound at the end of the bridge."

The lorry is believed to have hit the central reservation and then ended up off the side of the road.

Gwent Police has urged motorists to avoid the area if they can. Their officers have now left the scene.
