Part of Liverpool cruise terminal plans shelved amid coronavirus fallout

Changes to plans for Liverpool's new cruise terminal will see plans for a multi storey car park put on ice amid the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

The new terminal was set to be finished next year, with a 1800 space car park planned for nearby Great Howard Street for passengers to use.

Those plans are now on hold, with minutes of a cabinet meeting held at the end of May showing the council instead planning to review the need for a car park three years after the terminal opens, with the potential for passengers to use the new car park being built at Kings Dock instead.

The report says: "A further review of the car parking options for the Cruise Terminal be carried out after three years of operation of the new Kings Dock MSCP and a further report will be submitted to Cabinet as to whether there is a need for constructing a new MSCP specifically for the new Cruise Terminal."

The new terminal has long been viewed as a key project for the council, with mayor Joe Anderson hoping it will help cement the city's growing reputation as a tourist destination.

The number of passengers entering through the current terminal has been rising year on year and it was hoped the new terminal would aid that expansion further.

However, like the rest of the travel and tourism sector, the cruise industry has been battered by the coronavirus pandemic, with the vast majority of holiday cruises on hold across the globe.

Liverpool's plans for a new terminal have also been heavily criticised by the city's green councillors who point to the cruise industry's record as one of the most polluting of all travel industries.

The council has said in the past that it is working internally and with cruise companies to limit any pollution from increased cruise journeys from Liverpool.

The new terminal is projected to cost £50m.
