Part of iconic MacLellan's Castle in Kirkcudbright closed off for repairs

Part of an iconic Kirkcudbright landmark has been closed off while repairs are carried out.

Access to the north wing of MacLellan’s Castle has been cut off to allow work to the building to be carried out.

The rest of the building remains open to visitors.

A Historic Environment Scotland spokeswoman said: “We are currently undertaking conservation works at MacLellan’s Castle to consolidate the high level masonry and repair loose stonework at the chimney heads in the north wing.

"This follows on from recent works which included installing a new roof on the lower level at the west wing to ensure that part of the castle is protected from the weather for years to come.

“The reduced admission price reflects the restricted access within the north wing while the works are ongoing.

“The rest of the castle remains open for visitors to enjoy.”

MacLellan’s Castle is the second Historic Environment Scotland property to have restricted access while work is carried out.

A small part of Sweetheart Abbey in New Abbey is open – free of charge – after it was discovered part of the stonework is unsafe.
