Part of Edinburgh school set to be bulldozed and rebuilt under ambitious plans

Plans have been put forward this week to create a brand new high school at Wester Hailes that would service both local pupils and the community.

Submitted for consideration this week, the major project would see a new building able to support 800 pupils built on the current site of the Wester Hailes Education centre.

The redesign and redevelopment of the site is a council scheme currently being carried out in stages, the first of which was to refurbish part of the school building as well as the existing sports and community block.

Finished earlier this year, the second stage now includes creating the new building, which has been detailed to replace the remaining four teaching blocks currently standing.

Expected to be a four-storey building, the proposals will be discussed at upcoming consultation sessions in the community, and currently plans to allow for a contemporary learning space.

Providing state of the art education facilities for local pupils, the school would retain its newly refurbished sports pitches and swimming pool, as well as other community hubs.

Submitting the initial proposals, which will be subject to an estimated three months of consultations, the plans state: "The project is to deliver a new 800 pupil high school building, it aims to consolidate the educational facilities into one building, allowing for community use whilst retaining shared facilities in the existing community centre building."
