Part of Colwick Loop Road near Victoria Retail Park will close temporarily for £40m bypass work

A section of the busy A612 Colwick Loop Road will close for five nights from Monday as work progresses on the long-awaited £40m Gedling bypass.

The closure is necessary so a new junction can be completed.

The section between Burton Road and the Victoria Retail Park is due to close from 8pm to 6am each night from Monday, October 26, and will reopen at 6am on Saturday, October 31.

Resurfacing works at the new junction with Burton Road will be taking place and construction teams will be installing temporary barriers to minimise noise disruption for nearby residents.

Motorists will be able to follow a diversion route via the A46 and A52 - or a local route via Shearing Hill, Mapperley Plains, the A614, the A6097 Oxton and Epperstone Bypass and A612.

Residents on Whitworth Drive and the Nottingham Road service road can continue to access their properties through the temporary access that has been provided throughout the Burton Road closure.

Councillor John Cottee, chairman of the communities and place committee, on Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “The construction of a new junction with the A612 has been a significant part of the Gedling Access Road works programme and it is pleasing to see these works now entering the final stages.

“Despite the coronavirus pandemic pausing the planned start of works in March, we expect that this phase of the project will be completed ahead of the end of the year as originally intended.

“This closure is essential to the works completing early, and we would like to assure residents and motorists that we are working to keep disruption to a minimum.

“The loudest activities will be completed before 11pm, however some noise may be generated throughout the night.

"We have contacted residents in the area about this via letter and encourage them to contact us using the details provided with any concerns.”

The Gedling Access Road (GAR) forms the final part of a wider highways scheme after the Eastern Outer Loop Road works began in the 1980s which led to Lady Bay Bridge becoming used as a road crossing over the River Trent, while Daleside Road was extended and Colwick Loop Road and Trent Valley Road were built.

The road now under construction will complete the wider works that have been led by the county council.

It has been described as "the final piece in the jigsaw".

Once built, the 3.8km single carriageway will link the A612 Trent Valley Road and Nottingham Road to Mapperley Plains.

The GAR will run parallel with the A6211 Arnold Lane and through the centre of the old colliery site to serve the vast, £140m Chase Farm housing estate that's redeveloped the former pit site.

The road, set to cross several fields, Glebe Farm and a section of walled garden at Gedling House and part of the Carlton-le-Willows Academy grounds, will aim to reduce heavy traffic along Arnold Lane, Main Road and Shearing Hill through the centre of the village.

Planning permission for the GAR was approved in 2014 and a consortium has agreed to fund the project, made up of the county council, Gedling Borough Council, Homes England, Keepmoat Homes, the developer behind Chase Farm, and the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.
