Part of A52 Clifton Bridge to remain closed for days, Highways England says

Clifton Bridge is to remain closed until early next week as investigations into the damaged steel work continue.

The eastbound carriageway on the A52 has been closed for safety reasons and as a result of repair work, one lane in in the westbound direction, towards the city and the Queen's Medical Centre, is also closed.

A diversion was put in place from 3.30pm on Thursday, February 6 and Highways England originally hoped the road would reopen by midday on Friday, February 7.

It has been causing significant delays across the city.

A spokesman for Highways England said: "The A52 Clifton Bridge restrictions will remain in place until early next week. A full statement will be released this afternoon.

"We will be able to provide more information about the time frames for relaxing closures and repairing the bridge on Monday."

Head of service delivery at Highways England, Adrian Oulds, said: “Safety is always our top priority and we’ve taken the decision to close the road while we carry out further tests on the defect which we have found underneath the road.

“The structure itself remains safe but we’ve taken this decision to close the road eastbound to traffic while specialist investigations take place.

"Once these checks have been completed and we’re confident we can reopen the road, we will do so at the earliest opportunity.

“For now, we’d encourage motorists to leave extra time for their journeys this evening and to make sure they stay tuned to local media for traffic updates.”
