Parramatta Eels under investigation again for alleged salary cap breaches

The Parramatta Eels are facing fresh allegations of breaching the salary cap, two years after receiving heavy penalties for breaking the rules.

A former Eels executive has told The Australian newspaper that players were given subsidised rent on properties owned by the leagues club.

It's against the rules for third parties such as a leagues club to provide undeclared benefits to a player.

The Minister for Racing, Paul Toole, says the allegations will be comprehensively investigated with police and the NRL's Integrity Unit to be consulted.

Parramatta Leagues Club board member Max Donnelly has denied any wrongdoing on the part of the club.

"The club categorically denies that there have been any salary cap issues regarding players and property post the 2016 season," Donnelly said in a statement.

"[Parramatta] has been open and transparent with the NRL on all salary cap matters and no specific issues have been raised by them since I was appointed administrator in 2016."

In 2016, salary cap breaches saw the club stripped of 12 competition points and fined $1 million — the Eels also had to relinquish their Auckland Nines title.

Parramatta managed to have 13 wins for the season, but because of the points lost, the club finished the season 14th on the ladder.
