Parolee charged with vehicular hijacking in the Loop

Dec. 23--A West Side parolee was charged with vehicular hijacking and other crimes after allegedly forcing a man out of his parked car in the Loop on Tuesday, police said.

Dimitrious Johnson, 38, of the 5800 block of West Erie Street, is expected to appear at the Leighton Criminal Court Building on Wednesday, Chicago police said in a news release.

He is charged with a felony count of vehicular hijacking and two misdemeanor counts of battery and a parole violation, police said.

Authorities said Johnson forcefully took a vehicle from a 30-year-old man at 8 p.m. in the 200 block of West Lake Street in the Loop.

The victim was in the driver's seat of his parked vehicle when Johnson opened the door and forced the man over to the passenger seat, police said.

Johnson then allegedly began hitting the man in the face and body and then removed him from the vehicle and threw him to the ground, police said.

As the struggle was unfolding, a 24-year-old woman who was a pedestrian tried to intervene, police said.

But as Johnson tried to flee in the vehicle, he drove over the woman's foot, injuring it, police said.

Responding officers were able to send out an alert to nearby police, and the car was spotted in the 200 block of North State Street, police said.

Johnson was taken into custody without incident and identified by the man and woman, according to police.

The victims were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

According to Illinois Department of Corrections records, Johnson was convicted in 2012 of attempted armed robbery and was sentenced to four years in state prison. He was paroled March 24, 2014, and his parole status was to be completed March 24, 2016, according to records.
