About 1:20 a.m. Monday, Elmhurst police responded to 895 Washington Street for reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in a driveway, prosecutors said. When they arrived, officers found a Nissan Rogue SUV that had been reported stolen several weeks earlier.

A few minutes later, an officer spotted Mendez walking out of a backyard on Van Buren Street near the Nissan, prosecutors said. He ran when the officer tried to make contact.

Around 8 a.m. the same day, Mendez ran from officers who spotted him walking on St. Charles Road, prosecutors said. He was found in a garage in Villa Park and taken into custody.

An investigation determined Mendez had allegedly driven to Elmhurst in the stolen vehicle to break into the garage of a home on Van Buren, prosecutors said.

His bond was set at $100,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court on Sep. 20.
