Parliamentary elections in Iraq: Campaigning amid death threats

MIDDLE EAST MATTERS © FRANCE 24

In Iraq, at least 80 activists have been the target of assassination attempts since protests erupted in late 2019. The anti-government movement called for jobs and better public services. Now, as Iraq heads to the polls this weekend, many argue the killings have deterred protest movement candidates from standing in the elections. Our correspondents Jack Hewson and Lucile Wassermann travelled to the city of Kut to meet campaigners, who say the attacks are carried out by armed groups connected to Iraq's political establishment.

Meanwhile, the Pandora Papers scandal has blown the lid on the financial practices of some of the world's richest and most powerful people. Among them is Jordan's King Abdullah II. The leaks reveal how a network of offshore companies was created to amass a property empire worth $100 million in the US and UK.

Finally, the Arab World Institute in Paris is hosting an exhibition entitled "Lights of Lebanon". Works from 150 artists from three generations showcase the country's richness. "Lights of Lebanon" is taking place during a particularly difficult time for the country and aims to bring attention to the ongoing dialogue between Beirut and Paris. Our reporters went to check it out.
