Parliament will find a way to block any attempts at no-deal Brexit, warns Philip Hammond

Philip Hammond today warned it would be “shocking” if the next prime minister tried to sideline Parliament to crash Britain out of the EU.

But the Chancellor said he was confident MPs would find a way to block any attempt to force through a no deal.

Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt have said they are prepared to go for such a departure from the EU if a new deal is not struck with Brussels.

“It would be rather shocking if the House of Commons… could be simply sidelined by a Government that was doing something that was the exact opposite of what the House of Commons clearly wanted done,” Mr Hammond told the BBC’s Political Thinking podcast.

It came as a survey of Tory Party members by ConservativeHome put Mr Johnson on 67 per cent and Mr Hunt on 29 per cent.
