A volunteer marshal for Parkrun accidentally signed up to the wrong event but travelled the 40 miles to attend anyway.
Ian Guest, 60, meant to sign up to the Parkrun in Clifton Park, in Rotherham, near his home in Sheffield.
But the night before, after checking his emails, he realised he'd signed up to attend Clifton Parkrun in Nottingham.
"It was then that I realised 'oh dear!' I'd just searched Clifton Park Run and not checked which Clifton it was.
"But with it being late, I didn't want to let anyone down, I just decided to get the train and come along anyway."
Where most people would have apologised for the error, Mr Guest decided take the opportunity to "give back".
Mr Guest, a research assistant at Sheffield Hallam University got up at 5am to cycle to the train station in Worksop to travel to Nottingham.
On arriving in the city, he said "Nottingham is great for cyclists.
"It was a lovely day, and the event is slightly smaller. I was very welcomed and everyone was incredibly appreciate for me making the journey.
"I'd certainly like to return. I've been volunteering due to injury, but when I'm back, I'll be coming for a run."
On the Clifton Parkrun Facebook page, Ian has been thanked for his commitment.
In a post detailing the story, it ends: "Thanks Ian – you’re a proper parkrun hero, and you’re very welcome here anytime!"
